Two-sided bilingual poster available to you through the NYSUT Web site

2008 NYSUT hispanic posterFamed Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos is the focus of this year's NYSUT Hispanic Heritage Month poster.

Heralded by critics as being ahead of her time, a free thinker and a proto-feminist, de Burgos (1914-53) is arguably one of the most influential Spanish-language poets of our time.

"I encourage everyone to learn more about the inspiring poetry of Julia de Burgos," said NYSUT Vice President Maria Neira. "She is a literary legend in the Latino community.

Neira said the poster could help students and educators who may be unfamiliar with de Burgos' work learn more about her poetry and her life.

The NYSUT poster features a photo of a colorful mosaic that stands at Lexington Avenue and 106th Street in Harlem's El Barrio neighborhood, where de Burgos once lived and wrote.

Also featured is a photo of de Burgos and Spanish and English text of her poem "My Soul."

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 in celebration of the culture and contributions of Hispanic Americans.
