Don't eat the scab cookies

NYSUT activists in the New York City area will be supporting the striking workers at Stella D'oro in the Bronx from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 27.

If you can't get there, you can go to the Social Justice and Labor Center on the NYSUT Web site to learn more about why the union supports a boycott of the bakery products and how you can get involved.

The 135 members of Local 50 of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union went out in August after new owners demanded wage cuts and the elimination of all holidays, vacation and sick days.

Delegates at the recent NYSUT RA moved overwhelmingly to support a boycott.

In eight months, not one member has crossed the picket line, said PSC President Barbara Bowen, who brought the special order of business. She said members of Local 50 have worked in solidarity to save state funding for education.

"No matter how much you like them, don't eat scab cookies," she said.
