The U.S. Supreme Court's dismissal of the largest class action lawsuit in history was a serious blow to working people, women's rights and equity.
On June 20, the Court threw out a suit filed by 1.5 million current and former female employees of Walmart - which some have described as "the world's biggest boss" - who claimed they were paid less and promoted less frequently than their male counterparts. The Court found women who worked at Walmart did not have enough in common to constitute a "class" in a class action lawsuit. In a minority report, the Court did acknowledge that evidence "suggests that gender bias suffused Wal-Mart's company culture."
