NYSUT Hispanic Heritage poster
with Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis

Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis, the first Hispanic woman to serve in the U.S. Cabinet, is featured on this year's NYSUT poster that celebrates the important contributions of Hispanics.

Printed in both English and Spanish, the poster is issued annually to mark Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

Solis was raised in California by immigrant parents from Nicaragua and Mexico who had strong union roots. Her father was a Teamsters shop steward in Mexico, and organized for the Teamsters after arriving in the United States. Her mother was a member of the United Rubber Workers and an advocate for proper working conditions.
