Safe fun in the sun

The Skin Cancer Foundation has developed the free Sun Smart U education program to help teachers expose students to the importance of sun protection and give them the tools they need to prevent skin cancer. Sun Smart U features videos of young adults living with melanoma and their advice for kids. The program aims to make sun-safety behaviors — wearing sun-protective clothing and sunscreen — automatic and easy for students. The curriculum also emphasizes the importance of early detection with information about the warning signs of skin cancer. To access a downloadable poster, or lesson plans and other activities, visit http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/education-program.

Did you know the first Morse code message was sent from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore on May 24, 1844? The American Radio Relay League offers several resources to help introduce students to the language. For more information, visit www.arrl.org/learning-morse-code.

The "Freebies" column offers free opportunities for you and your students. We do not screen for subtle or not-so-subtle plugs.
