Izzo headed to hall of fame

Marguerite Izzo, a fifth-grade teacher on Long Island and 2007 New York State Teacher of the Year, will be inducted June 13 into the National Teachers Hall of Fame in Emporia, Kan.

Izzo, who teaches at Davison Avenue Intermediate School in Lynbrook in the Malverne Union Free School District, is among five teachers nationwide selected for induction this year.

A member of the Malverne Teachers Association, Izzo's teaching career spans 35 years. Last year, she was awarded the prestigious Lowell Milken Center Fellowship, which honors educators who have distinguished themselves in their profession.

Call for proposals

Educators are encouraged to submit proposals for Volume VIII of Educator's Voice, NYSUT's journal of professional practice. The theme — "Critical thinking and problem solving for the 21st century learner" — will investigate ways authentic, collaborative and hands-on learning can capture the essence of real-world tasks and prepare students for a global society defined by fast communications, ongoing change and increasing diversity.
