Bruce Codner Bevan

Bruce C. Bevan, a retiree from the Poughkeepsie School District Teachers Association, died Jan. 7; he was 80. Bruce gained near-celebrity status in the early '70s after his district denied his request to return to work following his loss of vision. Backed by NYSUT, he began a four-year legal battle for his job, finally winning reinstatement in the fall of 1974. In a New York Teacher article from the time, Bruce credited the union for standing by him. He advised teachers, "The best insurance policy you'll ever take out in your entire life will be the (union) dues you pay to your organization."

Daniel J. Burnham, age 91, passed away Jan. 9.

Daniel was born June 18, 1923 in Piercefield, N.Y. the son of Aaron and Adelaide Mousaw Burnham. He attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic School, Canton High School, graduate of Mooers Central School, Watertown School of Commerce, a BA from St. Lawrence University, a MA from Newark State of Union N.J. and graduate work from Potsdam University and North Carolina State at Chapel Hill.

Daniel enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He attended Hospital Corps School at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia, FMF School at Camp Lejune, N.C. and left for the South Pacific in 1943. He trained at Samoa, Hawaii and was in combat duty in Marshall Islands, and was attached to the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Marines and was presented the silver star for gallantry in action against Japanese forces on Engebi Island, Eniwetok Atoll for going to the aid of a wounded comrade while under heavy enemy sniper fire.

He left the Navy in 1951.

Daniel taught Social Studies for 24 years at Sackets Harbor Central School and Knox Memorial School in Russell, N.Y. prior. He was a member and stewart of VFW Post 1400 in Watertown.

Following the death of his first wife Kathyrn A. Robertson Burnham in 1980 he married Sarah S. Stoddard Kimmett in 1982. Sarah passed away in 2014.

He is survived by a brother Donald Burnham of Canton, a sister Mrs. William (Virginia) Kammerer of Albany, several nieces and nephews, stepchildren Mrs. Richard ( Marilyn) Hemsy of Cable, Wisc. Stanley Kimmett Jr. and wife Kim of Lenore, Tenn., Margaret and Geoge Schatz of Evanston, Illinois, Maryellen and Ted Pacocha of Webster, NY, Charles and Suzanne Kimmett of Westfield, Mass.

He was predeceased by his wives, a son D.J. Burnham in 1972, sisters Irene Jenne, Lucille Wells, Marie Scala Dorothy Hill; a brother Robert Burnham.

Evelyn Weisenberger Dunn | Nov. 27

Evelyn Weisenberger Dunn, age 85, died peacefully in her sleep Nov. 27, 2014 in West Chester, Ohio. She was predeceased by her parents, Alfonso and Anna Weisenberger, and her husband, William J. Dunn. Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Diane Farris and Marcia Dunn, both of West Chester and one son, Michael Dunn of Greenville, S.C. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Bethany (J.T.) Thompson, David (Amanda) Farris, Cheyenne Dunn and John Michael Dunn. Survivors also include her sister, Marilyn Sturdevant and several nieces, cousins and other relatives.

Evelyn was born and raised in Canandaigua, N.Y. and spent the majority of her life there. She taught Latin and Spanish for 35 years at both Victor Central School and Marcus Whitman Central School until she retired in 1986. After retiring, she moved to West Chester to be close to her family. Evelyn enjoyed spending time with family, genealogy, playing cards/Scrabble, reading and watching the Cincinnati Reds baseball games.
