Dear NYSUT Member:

There are few decisions in a person’s life more important than the decision whether or not to retire. New York State United Teachers is pleased to offer this retirement workshop as a service to assist our members.

This session will help familiarize you with important retirement planning materials provided by the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System (NYSTRS). While NYSUT is here as a resource as you consider retirement, it is important that you understand the nature of this service and the information this workshop and booklet provide.

The workshop cannot make decisions for you regarding your retirement. Indeed, it does not make recommendations about which options you should select. Our role is to inform, not to recommend.

For specific information about your retirement benefits, please contact Member Services at the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System (800-348-7298) or visit the NYSTRS website at www.nystrs.org for additional retirement information.

Your retirement benefit is determined by the Retirement System’s interpretation of state pension law, and you should only rely on definitive statements made by the Retirement System as you move forward with your retirement decisions.

NYSUT’s grass-roots activism and strong leadership remain essential in achieving gains in benefits and retirement security for our members — and in defending such benefits from those who would dismantle a cost-effective plan for public employers and taxpayers that NYSUT members can count on. Your TRS representatives provide a voice for retired and in-service members across the state in ensuring the stability of your benefits. And your continued activism as a NYSUT member is vital to ensure our ongoing success in advocating for the principles we hold dear — including a secure and dignified retirement.

Congratulations on reaching the point in your career where you can give careful consideration to retirement. As always, NYSUT is at your side in helping you make an informed decision.

In Solidarity,

Richard C. Iannuzzi
