Field trip? No bus? No problem! Let's take the subway.

Author: Robin Cohen

This week I am celebrating the first anniversary of my retirement from a wonderful career as a middle school math teacher.

I am volunteering at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and yesterday I was inspired by the teachers who brought in their students to the museum. With the school year winding down, nine groups of students led by amazing teachers came to the museum.

For the eight groups from New York City this meant taking public transportation as buses for field trips are no longer available. These teachers took their students on subways, mostly from the outer boroughs so that the kids could have the experience of going to the museum. Some of the teachers also had plans to take their students to the Museum of Natural History on another day. The one teacher from New Jersey was equally inspiring.

Watching these incredibly giving and talented people provide their students with another opportunity to learn just as the school year was ending filled me with pride.

I am very honored to count myself in with these and other teachers because this is what we do!
