ALBANY, N.Y. October 1, 2015 – New York State United Teachers President Karen E. Magee released the following statement today on the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon.

"Once again, the sanctity of the classroom, and the joy of teaching and learning, has been shattered by a senseless mass shooting. Once again, students will not be coming home to their loved ones because of society's unwillingness to tackle the root causes of these kinds of tragedies. Our thoughts and prayers go out today to those killed and injured, and to all those connected to Umpqua Community College and Roseburg, Ore., especially the first responders who saved lives through their actions."
