ALBANY, N.Y. June 7, 2016 — A coalition of higher education advocates will appear with the chairs of the Legislature’s higher education committees to jointly call for approval of a Maintenance of Effort bill covering SUNY and CUNY.

The joint news conference is scheduled for 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 8, in the 3rd floor corridor of the Capitol, adjacent to the LCA Press Room.

Sen. Ken LaValle, chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee, and Assembly member Deborah Glick, chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, will join leaders of NYSUT, United University Professions and Professional Staff Congress/CUNY and NYPIRG at the news conference.

The Maintenance of Effort bill would help reduce the exorbitant financial burden that students currently bear to fund SUNY and CUNY.

New York State United Teachers is a statewide union with more than 600,000 members in education, human services and health care. NYSUT is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association and the AFL-CIO.
