Wireless technology calls for caution; NYSUT plans webinar

Wireless radiation exposures from multiple devices are becoming more common in schools and other workplaces as more wireless routers are installed and more staff and students are encouraged to use laptops and tablets.

Once thought to be safe at levels that did not actually heat human tissue, scientists and doctors are now focusing on potential biological effects from low-level exposures, especially for pregnant women.

While scientists continue to examine this issue, emerging studies show altered brain development in children whose mothers were exposed during pregnancy. Effects include disruption in learning, memory and behavior.

An essential take-away message: Your proximity to wireless devices is an important factor.

Keeping your distance from wireless routers and equipment, especially when pregnant, is a good idea. Avoid use of your cellphone in cars, trains and elevators. More information can be found at www.babysafeproject.org.

NYSUT will present an hourlong webinar on this subject at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 9. Register at http://www.cvent.com/d/r4q6nx.
