FFECC pushback resurrects South Campus

Three years ago, faculty and staff feared SUNY Erie could lose its entire South Campus presence, its programs and all of the students who relied on its proximity.  Today, Erie’s South Campus has been preserved and reimagined with a new location fewer than three miles away from the original.
Students who attended the Disconnected conference in Tarrytown this spring learned what they could expect from the upcoming distraction-free school year, including more in-person socializing. 

New York ushers in distraction-free school year

This school year, something is missing from New York classrooms — cellphones. In accordance with state law, districts from Long Island to Buffalo have adopted distraction-free learning policies that prohibit student use of cellphones, smart watches and earbuds during school, and educators and administrators agree that the new bell-to-bell restrictions have not arrived a moment too soon.
SRPs met with New York State Senator Jeremy Cooney and other legislators during their annual SRP Lobby Day in May. SRPs were key to bringing the workplace violence prevention legislation to the forefront as part of their advocacy efforts. 

Locals push for safer workplaces for members

Work shouldn’t hurt. That is the message local leaders have been trying to get across since NYSUT got the Workplace Violence Prevention Act expanded to include public schools in 2023.

Locals begin to tackle APPR reforms

Long-awaited Annual Professional Performance Review reforms went into effect in March, and districts can begin to negotiate new performance review plans immediately. That means pretty soon, punitive APPR plans will be a thing of the past.
As part of their individual policies, districts will have to determine storage solutions  for cellphones and other internet-enabled devices.

Cellphone policies should be ‘rooted in realities of the classroom’

School districts across New York are preparing to roll out bell-to-bell cellphone policies this fall. Over the summer, local leaders are making sure educators’ perspectives are considered during that process. To assist local advocacy, NYSUT hosted a webinar on the new legislation in early June.
