NYSUT Social Justice

Social justice lies at the heart of unionism. As we fight to protect collective bargaining rights, strike back against education privatization and defend the rights of members, unions demonstrate the power of grassroots action and show how they can be vehicles for change within communities. The goal of NYSUT's Social Justice initiative is to take our social justice mission to the next level - moving beyond simple fundraising to actions that make REAL community change on issues important to members and the communities they live in.     • Hispanic Heritage: Rita Moreno

      NYSUT celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a new poster honoring Rita Moreno, an actress, dancer, and singer whose stage and screen career spans over seven decades. Moreno is one of only 18 EGOT award winners — performers who have received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards — and one of only 24 to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting, winning Academy, Emmy and Tony Awards.

    Hudson Falls High School Teacher Matt Rozell, who has been featured in NYSUT stories and a video, was honored today by the New York State Board of Regents for his extraordinary work educating students about the Holocaust and human rights, receiving the 2015 Louis E. Yavner Teaching Award.

    New York State United Teachers members will be part of a broad coalition today at the state Capitol lobbying lawmakers for passage of a wide range of bills aimed at prohibiting discrimination against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.

    MARCH FOR FARMWORKERS JUSTICE

    Farmworkers and supporters are ready to march for justice

    With planting season waning, farm workers are on the move. The March for Farm Worker Justice will begin May 15 in Smithtown on Long Island, and end 18 days and 200 miles later at the Capitol in Albany. Students will  join them on their long path, along with union members, activists, church groups and community leaders.

    Workers Memorial Day: Mourning the dead, fighting for the living

    The International Labor Organization reports that 2 million men and women die each year as a result of work-related accidents and diseases, said NYSUT President Karen E. Magee. “That’s about 6,000 workers worldwide each day.” The AFL-CIO reports about 10,000 workers a day are injured or become sick because of workplace hazards, she added.
