NYSUT ELT created this free, 30-hour course in direct collaboration with the New York State Education Department to give every educator in New York a strong foundation in evidence-based literacy instruction.

Across 10 virtual modules, you'll explore the core frameworks of reading science — Scarborough's Reading Rope, the Simple View of Reading, systematic phonics, and explicit instruction — and leave with practical strategies you can use in your classroom right away.

Why This Course Is Different

It's completely free, funded through a New York State grant as part of the governor's Back to Basics initiative. The curriculum was developed in collaboration with NYSED and aligned to the department's own standards. And it was built by the people who understand the profession best: classroom teachers, reading specialists, and literacy coaches at NYSUT's Education & Learning Trust — not a for-profit company or an out-of-state vendor.
