NYSUT Vice President Maria Neira has been named to Governor-Elect Eliot Spitzer s Education Policy Advisory Committee, which gives her an important role in advising Spitzer and his transition team on important education issues facing the state.

In mid-November, Spitzer and Lieutenant Governor-Elect David Paterson announced 13 policy advisory committees to help guide their transition efforts. Spitzer and Paterson said the committees were designed to include  leading experts and thought leaders from throughout the state  in each field.

Neira will serve on the Education Policy Advisory Committee alongside some of the other leading figures in New York education. The committee is co-chaired by Carl T. Hayden, director of the New York State Health Foundation and chancellor emeritus for the New York State Board of Regents; Augusta Souza Kappner, president of the Bank Street College of Education; Hunter R. Rawlings III, president emeritus of Cornell University; and Manuel Rivera, superintendent of the Rochester City School District and 2006 National Superintendent of the Year.
