Higher Education Members of the Year: Ellen Schuler Mauk and Jane Young

Ellen Schuler Mauk

Ellen Schuler MaukIn addition to serving the Faculty Association of Suffolk Community College for more than 30 years - including 28 years as its president and chief negotiator - Ellen Schuler Mauk is a deeply involved unionist at the statewide and national levels. A Higher Education Member of the Year, she is president of ED 39, representing community colleges on NYSUT's Board of Directors. She also chairs NYSUT's Community College Conference and is involved in activities ranging from Committee of 100 to AFT's Higher Education Program and Policy Council. She was nominated by Kevin Peterman, vice president of FASCC.

Jane Young

Jane YoungFrom leading faculty and staff through the aftermath of 9/11 to serving as a grass-roots organizer in her 40 years of service, Jane Young has been a strong advocate for faculty at Borough of Manhattan Community College, where she serves as chapter chair for the Professional Staff Congress at the City University of New York. This Higher Education Member of the Year is a staunch health and safety activist who has also served on the PSC negotiating team. She was nominated by PSC President Barbara Bowen.
