98 New York teachers earn profession's highest recognition

ALBANY, N.Y. January 16, 2007 - With a strong interest in strengthening the ongoing education of America's teachers, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) recently announced the names of 98 New York teachers who have met the profession's most difficult challenge by earning national certification.

New York State United Teachers President Richard C. Iannuzzi congratulated the 98 newly board-certified teachers. "These extraordinary teachers have voluntarily gone beyond the requirements of our profession to reach a very high standard of excellence. That not only increases their proficiency, but elevates their students, their colleagues and the schools where they teach."

National Board Certification is developed by teachers, with teachers and for teachers. It is a symbol of professional teaching excellence that is offered on a voluntary basis. It complements, not replaces, state licensing.

"This is a momentous achievement and a tremendous boon for the districts in which these teachers serve," said NYSUT Vice President Maria Neira. "Many studies have shown that board-certified teachers add value to their classrooms, which will be essential in closing the achievement gap. These teachers represent the gold standard of teaching excellence." Neira was recently elected to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the organization that grants educators national certification.

"National Board Certification strengthens and reaffirms quality teaching strategies, adds further credibility to the teaching profession and has a positive impact on student learning," Neira said. "Research indicates that board-certified teachers have a measurable influence on teacher performance as well as student learning, engagement and achievement, particularly for students of color."

Since 1994, more than 55,000 teachers across the country have become board certified. In New York, 691 educators have achieved the credential. "We continue to trail states like North Carolina, Florida and South Carolina, which provide incentives," said Neira. She said the union will continue to seek resources to narrow the achievement gap.

NYSUT represents 575,000 teachers, school-related professionals, academic and professional faculty in higher education, professionals in education and health care and retirees. NYSUT is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, National Education Association and the AFL-CIO.
