Stella D'Oro: No contract, no cookies

Eight months into a strike by a small local of Bronx-based bakers, delegates Saturday moved overwhelmingly to support a boycott of Stella D'Oro bakery products.

The 135 members of Local 50 of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union went on strike in August after new owners of the bakery demanded wage cuts and the elimination of all holidays, vacation and sick days.

"In eight months not one union member has crossed the picket line," said Barbara Bowen, PSC president, who raised the special order of business at the final general session. "No matter how much you like them, don't eat scab cookies," she said.

Bowen noted that members of Local 50 have taken part in a number of actions to save state funding for public education.
