Nearly 200 Rochester teachers received pink slips this week as the district carried through with plans to reduce the number of teaching positions. Adam Urbanski, president of the Rochester Teachers Association, said 197 members received layoff notices.

“Despite considerable protests from students, parents and teachers, Superintendent Jean Claude Brizard made good on his bad plan to lay off nearly 200 teachers and to eliminate approximately 300 teaching positions from next year’s budget,” Urbanski said in a letter to laid-off members. “We are committed to continuing our efforts during the summer months to amend this disastrous budget and to get the Rochester City School District to restore as many positions and lay-offs as possible.”
