Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Changes Everything

NYSUT is looking to raise awareness of issues that impact women: domestic violence, equal pay, and subtle and not-so-subtle sexism. The goal is to focus on these issues in the upcoming months. Watch for the Social Justice and Labor Center page at NYSUT.org as we post articles and updates on action items surrounding women's issues.

In the meantime, a good place to start is the recently released Shriver Report, "A Woman's Nation Changes Everything," which "presents an accurate and detailed portrait of American women and families at this transformational moment in our history."

As the authors note in the executive summary:

[For] the first time in our nation’s history, women are half of all U.S. workers and mothers are the primary breadwinners or co-breadwinners in nearly two-thirds of American families. This is a dramatic shift from just a generation ago (in 1967 women made up only one-third of all workers). It changes how women spend their days and has a ripple effect that reverberates throughout our nation. It fundamentally changes how we all work and live, not just women but also their families, their co-workers, their bosses, their faith institutions, and their communities. Quite simply, women as half of all workers changes everything.
