About the Day of Action for Public Education

Parents, students, educators and community and school board members, in a "Day of Action" across New York state, turned out today to tell lawmakers they must reject Governor Paterson's proposed $1.4 billion cut to public education funding.

Speaking at press conferences held at 18 schools from Long Island to New York City to Syracuse to Jamestown, the coalition said the cuts would further break the state's legislated promise to provide increased resources so New York's children receive a real opportunity for a sound education. That promise, made following a court order in the Campaign for Fiscal Equity litigation, was first broken when funding for this current fiscal year was frozen, forcing cuts in teaching staff and programs. Now the governor is trying to force even more drastic cuts that would stymie academic opportunity and progress for all of New York's students.

Participants in the statewide events include the Alliance for Quality Education, Campaign for Fiscal Equity, New York State Association of Small City School Districts, New York State School Boards Association, New York State Council of School Superintendents, New York State United Teachers, School Administrators Association of New York State, and the New York State Congress of Parents and Teachers.

Please check back. Updates and photos from each event will be posted as they become available.
