The New York State Office of Mental Health is offering a free webinar to prepare high school teachers and staff to recognize common indicators of psychological distress in students and approach at-risk students for referral to the appropriate school support service.
The new initiative called Kognito At-Risk for High School Educators is a virtual interactive training simulation allowing participants to engage in conversations with emotionally responsive student avatars that exhibit signs of psychological distress. Educators can practice and learn to use open-ended questions, reflective listening and other motivational interviewing techniques to effectively broach the topic of psychological distress, motivate the student to seek help and avoid common pitfalls such as attempting to diagnose the problem or giving unwarranted advice.
