Nineteen schools in New York state have been named by the U.S. Department of Education to this year's list of National Blue Ribbon Schools, which recognizes high student achievement.

The 2011 National Blue Ribbon honorees from New York stretch from New York City and Long Island to as far west as the Buffalo suburb of Williamsville. Nationwide, 305 schools in all were added to this year’s list.

"America's long-term economic prosperity and civic engagement depends on our children receiving a world-class education," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. "National Blue Ribbon Schools are committed to accelerating student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers. Their success is an example for others to follow."

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools that are either high performing, or in which student performance has improved to high levels - especially among disadvantaged students.
