Labor Day parade a proud display

Labor Day Parade

Hundreds of NYSUT members and leaders — including Executive Vice President Andy Pallotta, Vice President Catalina Fortino, Vice President Paul Pecorale, Secretary-Treasurer Martin Messner and United University Professions President Fred Kowal — joined thousands of unionists in New York City over the weekend for a rousing annual Labor Day parade.

Chanting and waving signs that said “Speak Up for Workers” and “Labor Works for You,” public and private sector unionists marched proudly up 17 blocks in Manhattan.

About 300 red-shirted UUP members handed pencils to parade watchers who cheered as they walked past.

“We’re showing our strength, our solidarity, and our willingness to literally take to the streets in defense of the work that we do,” said Kowal.

More than 100 unions and locals, including the AFL-CIO, the United Federation of Teachers, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the United Auto Workers, took part in the event, sponsored by the New York City Central Labor Council.
