ALBANY, N.Y. Feb. 26, 2018 — New York State United Teachers today called Janus v. AFSCME a direct threat to the voice — and economic well-being — of working people.
“The U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments today in what is, very simply, the latest in a series of attacks on our voice, our values and our union. The wealthy elite and corporate interests bankrolling this case want to erode the good wages, health benefits, job security and secure retirements won over decades by workers through their own labor and perseverance. They don’t want workers to have a strong voice. They benefit from rolling back the pay and benefits for union and non-union workers alike. What they aren’t counting on, however, is the strength of NYSUT members and union members everywhere. We have the will and the power to defend and protect what’s ours. We know that, if our voice is diminished, our public schools, colleges and hospitals — and all the people counting on us — will lose. We will not let that happen. United, the union will never be defeated.”
