"I’m so proud of our brothers and sisters in Vermilion, La.," said NYSUT President Andy Pallotta. "By fighting to protect and defend their colleague, Deyshia Hargrave, after she was arrested, handcuffed and threatened with the loss of her job simply for speaking up at a school board meeting, the Louisiana Association of Educators and the Vermilion Association of Educators are showing the value of strong unions for all our members.

"Hundreds of teachers rallied to stand with Ms. Hargrave. Together, they are sending a clear message: We have a voice that you cannot silence, and our unions will have your back. This is why we need strong unions — to protect our right to speak truth to power."
