Mandated reporters can get a 15-minute training supplement to stay up to date on state requirements.

The New York Office of Child and Family Services and State Education Department announced this week that mandated reporters don’t have to retake the two-hour Updated Child Abuse workshop to comply with a new state statute; instead, they can complete a short 15-minute supplemental training course that covers the important updates.

The statute focuses on identifying abuse and maltreatment in a child with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

While it initially appeared that all mandated reporters had to repeat the full two-hour child abuse workshop, SED now indicates that as long as mandated reporters have taken the full training course between November 1, 2022 and August 31, 2025 they can take a short 15-minute addendum from the same provider and be in compliance. The caveat is that they must take a supplemental training from the same provider to meet state requirements.

If mandated reporters don’t go back to their original mandated reporter training provider, then they will need to complete the full two-hour training again.

NYSUT’s Education and Learning Trust will be offering an asynchronous 15-minute module for those members who took the full two-hour course with ELT during the past two years.

As a reminder the new state law requires that all mandated reporters, including all certified educators, complete this training by November 2026.
