Jaime Escalante, the Bolivian-born educator who was the inspiration for the film Stand and Deliver, is the focus of this year's NYSUT Hispanic Heritage Month poster.

Escalante "devoted his career to making sure every one of his students received a quality education," NYSUT Vice President Maria Neira said. "He exemplifies a guiding principle NYSUT strongly believes in."

Escalante, who died in March at age 79, brought innovative teaching methods to his math classes at Garfield High in East Los Angeles. He helped his students master calculus, rejecting the notion that inner-city students couldn't learn complex mathematics.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. The poster is printed in English and Spanish.

Members can request a free poster by e-mailing orders@nysutmail.org. Reference Project No. 514A_10, include your name and mailing address. Local presidents can request posters in bulk; quantities are limited.
