It's an honor

Alan Schorn, Great Neck Teachers Association, was awarded the Jewish Guild for the Blind GuildScholar Program's Teacher of the Year Award. Schorn's student, Michelle Hackman, recently recognized as a GuildScholar, wrote the award-winning essay that acknowledged Schorn's role in bringing out the best in his students.

Kyle Allen, United Federation of Teachers, received the 2011 Stanley Schair CTE Teacher Award for Excellence and Innovation. Allen was recognized for his work integrating advertising themes, situations and problems into his technology classes. His award included an Apple iPad courtesy of the UFT and an iPad orientation session from Apple Inc.

Hector Alejandro and Darlene Mercado, United University Professions, Buffalo Center Chapter, were honored as Educators of the Year by former state Sen. Antoine Thompson. The distinction was presented at the Western New York Hispanic Heritage Awards. Both educators work at the University of Buffalo Educational Opportunity Center. Mercado is supervisor of counseling and advisement; Alejandro is a counselor.
