Teacher appreciation days

Staples will celebrate teachers during its annual Teacher Appreciation Days in August. On Wednesday, Aug. 17, Staples stores in New York City will host a special event from 9 a.m. to noon. Then on Saturday, Aug. 20, Staples stores throughout the rest of the state will host events from 9 a.m. to noon. Visitors to the store will receive a "goodie bag" with classroom supplies and other special values, while supplies last.

Benefits go paperless

Anyone now signing up for federal benefits has to choose an electronic payment method when applying for benefits. Anyone currently receiving paper checks must switch to electronic payment by March 1, 2013. If you're receiving a benefit electronically now, your payments will continue on the usual payment date. If you're not, this change is a reminder about the importance of signing up as soon as possible for electronic payments.

The Treasury Department has begun a "Go Direct" campaign to provide more information to consumers, from signing up for direct deposit, or another option — registering to receive benefits through a prepaid debit card. All information can be accessed at www.GoDirect.org or by calling 800-333-1795.
