Representative Assembly delegates unanimously endorsed Tim Southerton for a new term as one of three teacher-members on the board of the state Teachers' Retirement System.

Southerton, a Long Island special education teacher and president of the Sayville Teachers Association, is a member of the NYSUT Board of Directors and serves as a delegate for the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association conventions. He is a trustee of two labor-management trust funds, the Suffolk School Employees Health Plan and the Sayville Employees Trust Fund.

Southerton is running for a three-year term to the state TRS board in November when TRS delegates meet for their annual convention. His endorsement was supported by both of his fellow NYSUT-backed members on the TRS board, Paul Farfaglia of Jordan Elbridge TA, and Karen Magee of Harrison Association of Teachers.

"Tim is always prepared and has worked tirelessly on behalf of members," Magee said. Farfaglia agreed, noting the transition was seamless when Southerton took over for longtime TRS board teacher-member Michael Corn, who passed away last year.

The fourth NYSUT-backed member on the TRS board is David Keefe of Hempstead, representing retirees.
