Bruce Codner Bevan
Bruce C. Bevan, a retiree from the Poughkeepsie School District Teachers Association, died Jan. 7; he was 80. Bruce gained near-celebrity status in the early '70s after his district denied his request to return to work following his loss of vision. Backed by NYSUT, he began a four-year legal battle for his job, finally winning reinstatement in the fall of 1974. In a New York Teacher article from the time, Bruce credited the union for standing by him. He advised teachers, "The best insurance policy you'll ever take out in your entire life will be the (union) dues you pay to your organization."
