Anna Ext, 95, a former chapter leader at the High School of Music and Art, died May 11. Ext began her career in 1956 and went on to teach at the LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Her students included opera singers Catherine Malfitano, Teresa Santiago and Jennifer Hines, and the conductors James Conlon and Leon Botstein (now president of Bard College).

For many years Ext was an assistant conductor of the New York City All City Chorus and a faculty member of the Mannes College of Music. Her vocal musical groups performed at many UFT functions and events around New York City, and at the White House as well.

Thomas F. Flynn, a retired Yonkers social studies teacher with 33 years of experience died April 1. Tom was one of the many teachers in 1965 that signed a petition requesting an election to be held to have the Yonkers Federation of Teachers become the bargaining agent for the Yonkers teachers. Tom's interest and energy in teaching U.S. history earned him respect and praise from his students and colleagues.

Tom's special interest was the history of his beloved hometown of Yonkers. He was a member of the Yonkers Historical Society and gave lectures and even taught a course at the teacher center on the history of Yonkers. Tom authored two books - "Yonkers Life in the 1900s," and St. Patrick's Day sand the Irish Community in Yonkers, 1857-2003." Tom is survived by his wife, Lucy and other family members.

Carol C. Giunta died Feb. 22, 2013. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Grace Giunta; and special uncle, Anthony Cervasio. She is survived by her brother, Sal (Millie) Giunta; nephew, Thomas (Christine) Giunta; niece, Leslie (Jeff) Vrana; great niece, Naomi; great nephews, Noah and Jacob; aunt, cousins and many friends. Carol was a retired school teacher with the Rochester City School District.

Julia Chin Koon, a math and science teacher at IS 226 in South Ozone Park, N.Y., died Jan. 30. She was 65. She had been a teacher for 21 years before retiring in 1997 due to illness. Koon is survived by her husband, Leonard Murgatroyd.

Susan J. Neville | June 10

Susan J. Neville, 76, died June 10. Born in Rotterdam, New York on June 5, 1939, she was the daughter of William and Iris "Lil" Knapp. Susan graduated from SUNY Oneonta with a Bachelor Degree in Education.

Sue was a teacher for the Ballston Spa Central Schools, teaching at Malta Avenue and Milton Terrace Elementary Schools. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, most recently cruising to Alaska with her dialysis group. Sue loved to go out to lunch with her dear friend Marie and occasionally they would go to the Racino.

Sue was predeceased by her husband Edward "Cubby" Neville, her sisters Marilyn and Lois, and her sister in law Ann Kelley. She is survived by her brother-in-law Dr. William Kelley; her beloved nieces and nephews; her devoted friend Marlene and her precious cat Sophie.
