ELT offers courses toward TESOL/bilingual certificate

Source: NYSUT United

Interested in earning a Bilingual Extension to your teaching certificate, or an Advanced Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages?

NYSUT's Education & Learning Trust can help you get there.

Thanks to a unique partnership with Mercy College, NYSUT ELT is offering three-credit online graduate courses educators can apply toward a 15- or 12-credit Mercy program.

Applicants to Mercy's 15-credit Bilingual Extension must hold a New York State teaching certificate and will need to complete the Bilingual Education Assessment.

The 12-credit Advanced Certificate in TESOL program requires that applicants have a master's degree, a non-TESOL New York State teaching certificate, and 12 credits in a language other than English. Other stipulations apply.

Future online seminars on meeting the needs of English language learners are being developed.

The seminars can be applied toward professional development requirements for Commissioner's Regulations Part 154, and for newly required Continuing Teacher & Leader Education (CTLE) hours. In-service ELL education is required under CTLE.

For more information about these programs, contact NYSUT ELT at 800-528-6208.

NYSUT is also developing a fact sheet on certification issues for ESOL teachers, including pathways to content area certification.
