About National Board Certification

Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review. NBPTS offers 25 certificates that cover a variety of subject areas and student developmental levels.

Elevating the Teaching Profession

National Board CertificationMore than 80 percent of Americans agreed that teachers should achieve Board certification in addition to being licensed to practice, similar to professions like law and medicine, according to results from a national poll by PDK International and Gallup released in September 2014.

Research shows that the students of Board-certified teachers outperform their peers in other classrooms on achievement tests and that schools and districts with a high concentration of NBCTs see marked improvements in school culture, collaboration and teacher retention. To achieve dramatic improvement in education for all students, National Board is working with state, district and higher education partners to ensure that many more teachers have the opportunity to pursue Board certification.

“National Board Certification is an assurance to the public that teachers have met the profession’s highest standards for accomplished practice. Today, only 3% of teachers are Board certified. We must increase that number substantially to achieve the dramatic improvements we seek for all students.”

Ronald Thorpe, National Board President and CEO
