In January 2015, the Board of Regents approved the Statewide Strategic Plan for Science and directed the Education Department to develop new draft New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS). There are six components to the strategic plan: Standards; Curriculum; Professional Development to Enhance Instruction; Materials & Resource Support; Administrative and Community Support.
The Board of Regents approved new Pre K-12 Science Learning Standards in December 2016, which call for more hands-on learning. Instruction aligned to the P-12 NY State Science Standards begins in the 2019-2029 school year.
