The old labor maxim, "An injury to one is an injury to all," is guiding actions by NYSUT and the AFT, one of its national affiliates, in support of the UAW union members who work at Harrah's Casino in Atlantic City.
Thousands of casino workers, who voted to join the United Auto Workers two years ago, have had their benefits cut and faced stalled bargaining by uncooperative management. In contrast to their tough conditions, Harrah's CEO Gary Loveman, collected $39.6 million in total compensation in 2008.
Randi Weingarten, AFT President, has written to Loveman to tell him that AFT "will not conduct conduct business with any Harrah venue in the nation while you continue to stonewall in contract negotiations with UAW members in Atlantic City." A copy of the letter is attached.
NYSUT members who travel to Atlantic City are urged to skip a visit to Harrah's until it deals with its workers fairly.
