Sharon Bascom, Teacher from UFT
* Teacher
* PS 306 Ethan Allen, Brooklyn

Sharon Bascom was a kindergarten teacher at PS 306 in Brooklyn and a UFT member for more than 20 years. Although she had just begun teaching at PS 306 before Christmas, “it was as though she had always been there; she was like a member of the school family,” said Clifton Sherman, the school’s chapter leader.

She was very sociable and cooperative, and she had a pleasant attitude, Clifton said. “She had a fine understanding for problematic kids,” he added, and treated them calmly and with respect.

Sharon especially loved teaching math and seeing the smiles on her students’ faces – as if a lightbulb had gone off – as they figured out the answer to a math problem. That sense of accomplishment was something she built on day after day in her kindergarten class, establishing the groundwork for her students’ education for years to come. Sharon’s dedication was apparent, and she shared the joy of learning with her students.

She was also an active member of the Ozone Park Church of the Nazarene in South Ozone Park, Queens. She served as a board member there for many years and took the lead in her study group. Sharon enjoyed bringing family and friends to church to share in the spiritual dimension that enriched her own life.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Leslie Bascom; her sisters, Audrey, Merlene, Marylin and Odetta; her brothers, Terry, Mark and Johnny; her brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and aunts and uncles. She will be dearly missed by them all, as well as by her many friends, coworkers and her church family.
