Why Safe Zones?

Safe Zones

Creating a sense of belonging for all!

The Safe Zone training program aims to increase the awareness, knowledge, and skills of individuals who wish to learn more about, and to advocate for, the LGBTQ+ community. Through this training, participants will learn about LGBTQ+ identities, gender, and sexuality, and examine prejudice, assumptions, and privilege. Participants will develop skills that will enable them to create safe, welcoming, and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals and to challenge homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism. Upon completion of the training, participants can choose to display the Safe Zone sticker as a visible symbol of their support and an affirmation of their commitment to ensuring that their communities are respectful, inclusive, and safe.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop knowledge of gender, gender identity, gender expression, and the diversity of sexual orientations, as well as basic vocabulary and respectful language.
  • Examine and reflect upon assumptions, prejudices, biases, and privileges related to LGBTQ+ identities.
  • Understand the negative impacts of failing to engage in supportive, respectful ways and learn strategies to intervene in situations of discrimination or harassment.
  • Acquire and share resources and referrals for ongoing support and education.
  • Engage in reflective thinking and group discussion to increase self-awareness and empathy when interacting with LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Encourage and foster active, ongoing allyship/advocacy/support for the LGBTQ+ community.
